Nunavik Landholding Corporations Association

The Nunavik Landholding Corporations' Association was created on May 17, 2002. Its members are all the Inuit Landholding Corporations created by virtue of Section 5 of the "Act respecting the Land Regime in the James Bay and Northern Quebec Territories".

The Landholding Corporation of each community holds title to the lands on which the community is based and extends to include all Category I lands of the community. It holds title to these lands as proprietor on behalf of all Inuit registered as residents of that community. Its primary responsibility is to enter into lease agreements for the use of lands within the Category I designation. It has jurisdiction over hunting and fishing rights over Category I and II lands of the community. It also has the responsibility of maintaining and up-dating a listing of beneficiaries (Inuit). As such the Landholding Corporations are the ethnic Inuit representative of the Inuit of their community.

In general, every Inuit community has a Landholding Corporation, with the notable exception of Ivujivik and Puvirnituk. These two communities have chosen not to undertake the selection of their Category I and II Lands following the signing of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (1975) and consequently have not created a Landholding Corporation for their community. More »
